PostSubject: Which surplus to open next?   Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:22 pm

It's time to open another can of surplus and I got to thinking ...

I've got a couple of cans of Silvertip -- which is what I've been shooting. I also have a can of the older '40s ammo on Izhevsk stripper clips. I was going to save that can unopened for future days when I needed more clips. But I've been hearing about some problems with the older ammo in the galvanized tin; it's inaccurate and sometimes hangfires. I bought a case of this stuff and didn't have problems with the one I opened - I posted about it here with pictures. But, if this stuff isn't ageing well maybe I should get it sent down range.

What do y'all think? Should I go ahead and open the oldest can and use that '40s stuff up while saving the stripper clips, or should I leave it in the can for the future and open one of the newer green cans?

I vote for using up the old stuff, yes. Rotate some inventory. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I think Zeiss has it down to a science, maybe he will chime in.

Don't look at me, I've never fired a round older than 1972 in my Mosin. I chose to buy the 1980s Russian silver tip ammunition when I bought a case because I was concerned about the reliability of the 1940s vintage stuff when I was planning to fire 400-500 rounds in a weekend -- but that doesn't mean I had problems with the older rounds, just that I avoided it on the potential.

I'd agree, though, go ahead and shoot the older ammo; it'll only get worse in terms of reliability and accuracy as more time passes, and the clips will keep once you've stripped the rounds out of them (just store them in airtight bags with rust inhibitor pads and/or desiccator packets).

Good enough then, guys -- I'll open the tin box next and save the spam cans for later.

Thanks

Just a note on ammo. I opened the '40s ammo on stripper clips and went shooting. For the first time I shot the older ammo side by side with Silvertip. The older stuff had a (slightly) different point of impact and sticky extraction even though there were no signs of high or excessive pressure on the primer or case.

The Silvertip was an improvement in more ways than I realized. At least I'll have plenty of stripper clips for the foreseeable future.

Whats your silver tip details Ampy?

The 188 factory produces some VERY good ammo. IMO the best of all the milsurps.

I don't know the details. The can is gone and I didn't write down the particulars.

The headstamp on the ammo is: 10 at top 72 on bottom.
