PostSubject: Action wrench for Mosin Nagant   Mon Oct 31, 2011 12:17 am

Heres a quick wrench me and a friend threw together quickly to get a mosin barrel off.

With the addition of some heat, and 3ft of extension, it worked well.

I drew up a cad file of the tool. Heres a pic of the file. I have it in .dxf if anyone wants the file, just PM me.

I dont have a print, cause I suck at prints that involve complicated angles, partial circles and stuff. Razz
But heres all the dimesions you should need to make your own wrench out of 1/2" or 5/8" plate steel.

The lug tapers from 0.719 down to 0.58. From Mosin to Mosin im sure these measurements would vary slightly. Always best to measure your own before building the wrench. Good luck and post your results if you can. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Interesting! Did it take a lot of heat and torque to accomplish?

Yes it did. Shocked Actually, when we were heating the receiver up, oil and oil vapor POPPED out of the mounting lug bolt hole like dang cap gun! So lesson learned on that one. Have the lug pointing down when your heating these old buggers.

Wow! So no easy task then huh? Neutral
I wonder how difficult the PSL barrels are to take off?

Did you put the new one on with loctite?

No loctite. Just slammed it home to 175ft/lbs. And index marked it.

Im thinking the PSL barrels would be a bit easier. Just for the fact they arent nearly as old and typically have 100,000rnds less on their odometers. Neutral

175ft#'s huh? Wow! Is that typical for a barrel torque setting?

I have no idea. Suspect

A local gunsmith legend said, 'eh, you'll be alright'. So.... with that scientific advice, its held so far.

I also asked some of my Mil friends (who take off lots of barrels) and they didnt have an exact number, but felt that was sufficient aswell.

There is a vid on youtube where a guy pulls a stock mosin apart (i cant find the vid), and its was something like 450ftlbs. He then cleaned everything and retorqued it back to the same spot, and it was considerably less.

For the size threads I'd say that's a little low. That's not that much torque on clean threads of that size. With the wrench he has made, it should be a breeze to get that with just a short cheater, say three feet long.....175/3= just a hair more than 60 lbs on the bar. Not hard at all. 4 feet would be 43.75 lbs on the bar. I'm not sure what the thread size and diameter is but I'll assume somewhere near 5/8-11 which would take anywhere from 96 to 230 ft lbs. And if they are 3/4-10= 155 to 380, 7/8-9 = 206-600. The low # being SAE Grade 0-1-2 74,000 psi Low Carbon Steel and the highest # being SAE Grade 8 150,000 psi Med. Carbon Alloy Steel. Granted these numbers are for solid bolts torqued on clean dry threads. YMMV. But it's a start. It won't let me post a link so look up bolt torque specs if you are interested in more info.

The OD is .975? There is no size listed near that number nor with the 0.940, however, this one would be nearest the 15/16 SAE size which would be 0.938 or 23.813mm. The nearest to 0.975 would be two sizes 1) 31/32"_0.969_24.606mm and 2) 63/64"_0.984_25.003mm
So this makes me wonder if rifles in general have their own sizing system or if the Russians just did things their own way back then?

Embarassed Guess I should be in bed sleeping instead of trying to interpret words. :monkey: Anyway, the oal was my goof, didn't pay any attention to those three little letters. (or didn't recognize them for what they were)
I don't know anything about thread patterns. Just coarse or fine LOL. I'm using a online engineers reference guide for my numbers which is the link I was trying to post. I'm not a machinist after all although I've learned some after being a machined parts inspector a while back.

Guess I'm going for some eyelid checks about now see if I have any cracks in em. What a Face

I guess it kinda depends on how determined you are. I used a Milling machine and a tig welder. But those are not required. Hell, you could forge the part yourself and use a file to shape it if you had access to blacksmithing tech..... which would be super kewl.

What tools do you have?

Do you want to rent my tool?

Thats beyond the scope of my expertise. You'll have to google forging metal parts.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Would be much easier to just get a chunk of steel and weld and cut what you need.

Do you have a hex receiver or round?

A suitable square hole with corner mounted setscrews (the latter to bear against brass, bronze, or steel pads to protect the receiver) ought to work just fine, though an octagonal hole to fit would be preferred. A Silver & Deming type twist drill to start, with smaller holes drilled at the corners, and some file work (ideally with a power file or belt file), in an inch thick plate, then weld or bolt on long bars for handles (or make the thing one piece, though six or eight feet of inch thick, four inch wide plate might get expensive). Not a difficult project, just time consuming.

The barrel vise would be the same as for a round receiver -- round, tapered hole to fit the chamber swell in thick hardwood, two heavy clamping bolts, and some rosin to increase grip, either bolted to something really solid and heavy (preferably anchored to the floor) or held in a bench vise so mounted.

How did I miss this thread? I have been trying to find a barrel wrench that doesn't cost and arm and leg. Now to find a machinist to help make it. Thanks SilverTip

No problem. Every now and then, you can find some on ebay. But a guy can easily make his own with a little elbow grease.
